From the 16th to 19th of April top sailors from Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Japan, Greece, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand will join American counterparts to do battle for the coveted 2008 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship title. Organised by the Storm Trysail Club, in conjunction with the Farr 40 Class Association, racing will take place off Miami Beach in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. What makes the Farr 40 class stand out in the yachting world is that not only are the forty-foot yachts virtually identical, only the boat's owner can helm in races and the owner must be an amateur. Only four crew members on board can be professional. In the eleven years since the championship first started several Farr 40 amateur owners have come to the fore in the world of competitive sailing they include Italy's Vincenzo Onorato (Mascalzone Latino) and Switzerland's Ernesto Bertarelli (Alinghi), current holder of the America's Cup. A daily TV news feed, free of restrictions on usage for TV and internet, will be produced from the 2008 World Championship.
